Generation Z…It’s Complicated…

In danah boyd’s recent book, It’s Complicated: the social lives of networked teens, she interrogates several myths regarding teens’ use of social media. Why do teens seem strange online? What does it mean to lead from an inquiry stance?

By Randy Ziegenfuss

What does it mean to lead from an inquiry stance?

Leading from an inquiry stance is grounded in the practitioner’s desire to bring about change – a change in their own practice. The need for change is uncovered as a result of an open mindset and the never-ending quest to problematize practice. Leaders who embrace an inquiry stance are relentless about seeking out ways to […]

Would education be more valued if more educators shared their work?

Would education be more valued if more educators shared their work?

I just finished reading Austin Kleon‘s Show Your Work! 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered. My interest in this book stems from the challenge I have in my own work – getting educators to understand the value of sharing their own and their students’ work. Most people reading this post are probably […]

What is school for?

What is school for?

Lots of ideas to ponder in this talk from Seth Godin. My favorite: For me, this prompts a few questions. In what ways do we currently make school more like art, less like work? How can we change and make school more like art and less like work? As educators, do we need to first […]

Essentialism in a World of Nonessentialism

After reading Creativity, Inc. earlier this summer (blog thoughts here), I took a dive into Greg McKeown’s new book, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. This is a terrific read, particularly if you feel inundated with work you don’t want to be the highest priority. While I learned quite a few new strategies I will […]

Should you be remarkable?

Should you be remarkable?

This idea from a post (How to be remarkable) on “being remarkable” has been swirling around in my mind for the past few days. Can you ‘leave your mark’ in this life, can you be remarkable, if no one is remarking about you? While it’s important to be remarkable in your own eyes, making a […]

About Working At The Edge:

My name is Randy Ziegenfuss, and I'm a retired public school superintendent and a life-long educator with over 34 years experience developing a passion for teaching, learning, leadership and technology. <read more...>

I first came across the phrase working at the edge while learning about the work of Marzano, et al. School Leadership That Works: From Research to Results. In this work, the researchers define 21 responsibilities of the school leader, one being change agent. A change agent is defined as one who is, "...willing to challenge school practices that have been in place for a long time and promoting the value of working at the edge of one's competence."
