Building Relationships

By Randy Ziegenfuss

This short video reminded me of the importance of building relationships at the start of a school year. This is particularly applicable to me as I start work in a new role. We can be so goal driven that we focus on getting the job done at the cost of … [Continue reading]

Status Quo

By Randy Ziegenfuss

I love this image... Source: pinerly.com via Scott on Pinterest Why don't we have more school leaders re-imagining learning around time and space; and teaching around connection, sharing and collaboration? None of use has "the answer," but we're … [Continue reading]

Time and Change

By Randy Ziegenfuss

Two great videos shared on different blogs today. The first comes from Scott McLeod and Dangerously Irrelevant. The video shares the important idea that we need time if we are going to be creative. For me personally, this idea connects to … [Continue reading]

Know a skeptical parent? Have them watch this.

By Randy Ziegenfuss

This video, created by Frank Romanelli (discovered via Kevin Hodgson's blog - Kevin's Meandering Mind), struck me as an excellent watch particularly for parents skeptical of the changes happening in the world today as a result of technology. I'm … [Continue reading]

The Mirror

By Randy Ziegenfuss

It's human nature to not want to take responsibility for problems. We are good - very good -  at this behavior in education. One of the most common problems I hear about (largely from adults - parents and teachers) is the "distraction" of technology. … [Continue reading]

Are we authentic in reporting the progress of our 1:1 programs?

By Randy Ziegenfuss

I ran across two items today (one recent and one not-so-recent) that were extolling the virtues of the first year of two iPad 1:1 implementations. For me, these are typical of what I read about 1:1 program implementations. So I''m generalizing. … [Continue reading]

About Working At The Edge:

My name is Randy Ziegenfuss, and I'm a retired public school superintendent and a life-long educator with over 34 years experience developing a passion for teaching, learning, leadership and technology. <read more...>

I first came across the phrase working at the edge while learning about the work of Marzano, et al. School Leadership That Works: From Research to Results. In this work, the researchers define 21 responsibilities of the school leader, one being change agent. A change agent is defined as one who is, "...willing to challenge school practices that have been in place for a long time and promoting the value of working at the edge of one's competence."
