Some thoughts on social media in education

I found an article this morning from Lisa Nielsen and Lisa Cooley, Newsflash: Social media is real life. Take a few minutes to go read it and then share it with a parent or educator. I think it is an excellent argument for why we as educators need to embrace social media. The ideas expressed […]

Advocating for the Internet and Social Media

Advocating for the Internet and Social Media

As I’m catching up on some interesting finds on the internet this weekend, I stumbled onto a few posts that seemed to connect around this idea of advocating for the use of the Internet and social media. In the first post, Mimi Ito shares What Teens Get About the Internet That Parents Don’t. The title […]

Are we educators literate for the 21st Century?

By Randy Ziegenfuss

Are we educators literate for the 21st Century?

This was one of my most memorable takeaways from the 2013 PETE & C conference held several weeks ago in Hershey, PA. It came from Rob Mancabelli’s presentation, “Learning in a networked world.” In the presentation, Rob referenced the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) position statement on the Definition of 21st Century Literacies. […]

Digital Age Parenting

By Randy Ziegenfuss

This post has been cross-posted to SalisburySD.US. A week ago, I shared a post asking parents and teachers how they manage digital distraction in the classroom and at home. We’ve had several replies in the comments section. Be sure to check them out and add yours if you haven’t already! Over the past week, I’ve […]

Quotes

Quotes

Recently, I was re-organizing my Evernote account and ran across a note that contained memorable quotes. I don’t recall specifically, but I probably collected these a few years ago and then stopped. After reading them, I felt the collection would make a good post on this blog. I’m not sure who said some of them, […]

Learnist

Learnist

This post was originally posted at TL2014.org. It is just as relevant here! With access to technology, today it is easier than ever to learn just about anything. One of the challenges, though, is how to find the information we want and need quickly. One way is to develop and refine our search skills. Recently, […]

Technology use “…if it’s appropriate.”

Technology use “…if it’s appropriate.”

I was checking out some of the video on the teachingchannel.org site in preparation for several workshops with teachers on Ruben Puentedura’s SAMR Model of Technology Integration. Here are two that got me thinking about how to move from the enhancement stages to the transformation stages within the SAMR Model: Daily Assessment with Tiered Exit […]

The Neutrality of Technology and Social Media

By Randy Ziegenfuss

The Neutrality of Technology and Social Media

This is a valuable share because we tend to blame technology rather than ourselves for the negatives. Technology is inherently neutral – neither good nor bad. It’s all in how WE choose to use it. The article The Advantages and Disadvantages of Student Social Media Use from Justin Marquis, Ph.D. (@drjwmarquis), effectively outlines a lot […]

About Working At The Edge:

My name is Randy Ziegenfuss, and I'm a retired public school superintendent and a life-long educator with over 34 years experience developing a passion for teaching, learning, leadership and technology. <read more...>

I first came across the phrase working at the edge while learning about the work of Marzano, et al. School Leadership That Works: From Research to Results. In this work, the researchers define 21 responsibilities of the school leader, one being change agent. A change agent is defined as one who is, "...willing to challenge school practices that have been in place for a long time and promoting the value of working at the edge of one's competence."
