Twitter for Superintendents – Pt. 1 – Why?

This is the first in a two-part series on helping Superintendents get started using Twitter. The second part of this series: Twitter for Superintendents; The WHAT and HOW. It’s 2017, and social media has undeniably become a permanent part of the fabric of our society. It’s time that educators, and that includes you, Superintendents, take the leap, […]

What does a Superintendent do? #ASuperDay #ASuperDayRZ

By Randy Ziegenfuss

Cross-posted to SalisburySD.US. I have often shared that great things happen in our schools and classrooms. I know this because I get to see it…every day. Our professionals – teachers, teacher leaders and administrators – work tirelessly to provide the best opportunities for our students and staff to learn. Office personnel, instructional assistants, cafeteria staff, […]

Arguments Against Testing

Arguments Against Testing

I’ve started reading Anya Kamenetz’s new book, The Test: Why Our Schools are Obsessed with Standardized Testing — But You Don’t Have to be. While I’m early in the book, it is an easily accessible read for educators and parents. By the end, I’m hoping this will work well for a parent workshop – either as a presentation/discussion […]

PETE&C 2015 – Are you evaluating your tech initiative?

In the last post, Moving toward transformation…., I shared how a colleague (@lfuinihetten) and I were days from the opportunity to dig deeper into our leadership challenge and working with 18 other school districts from across the country, researchers such as Ruben Puentedura and Damian Bebel, and a team of facilitators from Apple, Inc. Because of inclement weather conditions, we never made it […]

Moving toward transformation…

Moving toward transformation…

One of the greatest organizational and leadership challenges behind any 1:1 program, where every student has access to a digital device, is ensuring transformation of the teaching and learning process. As we often hear, it’s not about the technology – it’s about what we do with it. Changing teaching, learning and leadership practices around the […]

Twitteracy, Literacy and Generation Z – a few more presentations

Twitteracy, Literacy and Generation Z – a few more presentations

Presentations benefit both presenter and attendee as opportunities to share and learn. I enjoy sharing ideas, and developing a presentation always helps me to clarify my own thinking. And if others can benefit in that process, that’s a bonus! In the last post, I shared a presentation I did for the Keystone Technology Innovators/Integrators group […]

3 considerations for transforming classrooms

By Randy Ziegenfuss

3 considerations for transforming classrooms

What is the greatest challenge schools face using technology for teaching and learning? As a practitioner, the data I’ve collected both formally and informally suggests one of the greatest challenges is to use  technology in ways that transform the teaching and learning process (as defined by the SAMR model). It is often easy for students to use technology in ways that […]

Summer Project!

By Randy Ziegenfuss

Summer Project!

About two years ago I suggested to my colleague, Lynn Fuini-Hetten (@lfuinihetten), that we needed to do more sharing and that we should start a podcast. After learning how to record something that sounded decent and purchasing some equipment, I was ready to go. Well, not so much! (And I’ve been harassed for the past […]

About Working At The Edge:

My name is Randy Ziegenfuss, and I'm a retired public school superintendent and a life-long educator with over 34 years experience developing a passion for teaching, learning, leadership and technology. <read more...>

I first came across the phrase working at the edge while learning about the work of Marzano, et al. School Leadership That Works: From Research to Results. In this work, the researchers define 21 responsibilities of the school leader, one being change agent. A change agent is defined as one who is, "...willing to challenge school practices that have been in place for a long time and promoting the value of working at the edge of one's competence."
