As we develop our vision for learning in K12, are we considering the future landscape of work? I admit, this is not an area I’ve explored much. But I need to. We all need to if we are providing a relevant education to our learners.
The world of work is changing, and all signs indicate further disruption as Generation Z leaves high school and enters the job market directly or through the college/university path. I do feel like we are not in tune with the changing landscape of work while reinforcing traditional models of career counseling and preparation.
With the increasing convergence of technology and work through automation and artificial intelligence, how can we leverage the career conversation to create greater urgency for change and set our students up for success in what is going to be a different, potentially difficult, more volatile economy?
Here are three resources useful to start thinking about the conversation:
-
Martin Ford on Artificial Intelligence, Automation and the Future of Work – Curious Minds podcast with Gayle Allen discussing how advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics and automation technologies will impact the future of work. Some questions explored in the podcast: What jobs will they replace? Which industries will they decimate? What impact will they have on how we live and work in what many are calling a post-industrial age?
-
David Burkus’ Big Idea – A short video that engages us with the idea that we need leaders to reinvent the factory to produce the most innovative ideas. If we’re reinventing the factory, what does that mean for how we are preparing our students?
- Meet Generation Z – “Generation Z are self-starters with a strong desire to work for themselves, learn about entrepreneurship, and design their own programs of study in college.” If more in the work force will be entrepreneurs and independent contractors, how is K12 preparing learners to navigate this new world? What skills are critical?
What resources can you share to elevate the conversation around the shifting career landscape for Generation Z?
