#46 of 60: How might we leverage the age of automation in favor of human-centered transformation? 🤔

By Randy Ziegenfuss

In Kevin Roose’s recent book Futureproof: 9 Rules for Humans in the Age of Automation, he makes what has become a familiar argument as we get deeper into a world where AI is increasingly impacting all aspects of life:

Human skills still matter.

We have two choices:

Compete with the machines (and lose).

Focus on our humanity and do what machines cannot.

BTW….here are his 9 rules (which I think differentiate his work from others):

  1. Be surprising, social and scarce
  2. Resist machine drift
  3. Demote your devices
  4. Leave handprints
  5. Don’t be an endpoint
  6. Treat AI like a chimp army
  7. Build big nets and small webs
  8. Learn machine-age humanities
  9. Arm the rebels

Who’s curious?

❓ Provocations:

Let’s unpack this in the context of schooling:

Looking at what we are currently doing, are we preparing kids to compete with machines or be more human? What structures, practices and mindsets should go that aren’t useful for anything but competing with machines? What structures, practices and mindsets should we embrace that will help us develop our humanity?

About Working At The Edge:

My name is Randy Ziegenfuss, and I'm a retired public school superintendent and a life-long educator with over 34 years experience developing a passion for teaching, learning, leadership and technology. <read more...>

I first came across the phrase working at the edge while learning about the work of Marzano, et al. School Leadership That Works: From Research to Results. In this work, the researchers define 21 responsibilities of the school leader, one being change agent. A change agent is defined as one who is, "...willing to challenge school practices that have been in place for a long time and promoting the value of working at the edge of one's competence."
