#32 of 60: In a human-centered system of schooling, is there a “right balance” between job skills and well-being? 🤔

By Randy Ziegenfuss

Klaus Schwab coined the phrase Fourth Industrial Revolution in 2015 to describe the unique time period we are living in…a time where we see the convergence of the physical, digital and biological spheres.

Check out this 12 minute video (The Fourth Industrial Revolution) to learn more about what distinguishes the 4th Industrial Revolution from the previous three.

While there is some talk of “maximizing human well-being,” I do wonder if organizations like the World Economic Forum place too much emphasis on career and job skills at the expense of overall well-being.

See These are the top 10 job skills of tomorrow––and how long it takes to learn them.

Career is one area where we can exercise and develop our well-being…positive emotion, engagement, positive relationships, meaning and accomplishment.

❓ Provocations:

Have we narrowly defined well-being to mean career success? If so, and in our pursuit of human-centered schooling….with an outcome of well-being and flourishing…how do we ensure the old school-centered, job skills-focused paradigm doesn’t draw us back into over-emphasizing the job-skills narrative over well-being? (Think Seligman’s PERMA framework.)

I first came across the phrase working at the edge while learning about the work of Marzano, et al. School Leadership That Works: From Research to Results. In this work, the researchers define 21 responsibilities of the school leader, one being change agent. A change agent is defined as one who is, "...willing to challenge school practices that have been in place for a long time and promoting the value of working at the edge of one's competence."
