#15 of 60: Learn, unlearn, relearn: How do we rethink teaching to meet the needs of learners and society? 🤔🤔🤔

By Randy Ziegenfuss

Late in 2020, we saw the release of the 2nd Edition of the Educator Competencies for Personalized, Learner-Centered Teaching.

Couple of observations….👀

First, a human-centered thread is obvious. Instead of focusing solely on the technical requirements of teaching, we see important human-centered mindsets reflected in the Intrapersonal Domain (Need to Reflect)

* Dedication to all learners, especially those historically marginalized and least served.

* Embrace the learner-centered vision for teaching and learning

* Engage in practices of persistence and growth mindset.

* Dedication to lifelong learning and professional growth.

* Practice and model self-care.

Second, in the Instructional Domain, we see many of the elements of powerful learning shared in earlier posts. There is more and more agreement on the elements learner-centered learning models need to embrace.

* Embrace a mastery approach to learning.

* Use assessment tools and data for learning.

* Customize learning experiences.

* Prioritize student agency and ownership.

* Prioritize authentic, real-world learning that takes place anytime and anywhere.

If how we redefine the role of the teacher is of interest to you in this new human-centered paradigm, be sure to explore the competencies along with the indicators of success and accompanying resources that bring this important work to life!

About Working At The Edge:

My name is Randy Ziegenfuss, and I'm a retired public school superintendent and a life-long educator with over 34 years experience developing a passion for teaching, learning, leadership and technology. <read more...>

I first came across the phrase working at the edge while learning about the work of Marzano, et al. School Leadership That Works: From Research to Results. In this work, the researchers define 21 responsibilities of the school leader, one being change agent. A change agent is defined as one who is, "...willing to challenge school practices that have been in place for a long time and promoting the value of working at the edge of one's competence."
