Shift Your Paradigm Podcast – Memorable Podcast Conversations

By Randy Ziegenfuss

Several years ago, my colleague, Lynn Fuini-Hetten, and I started our own inquiry into learner-centered leadership as we got more engaged with the learner-centered education community. Education Reimagined worked with us to connect us to many learning environments around the country to interview leaders and learners in varying learner-centered models.

Over the past year, Lynn and I began to look across over 50 episodes to uncover themes and explore more deeply what it means to be a learner-centered leader. We began sharing our findings in a series of articles originally published as part of Education Reimagined’s magazine Voyager.

  • What does learner-centered leadership look like? (Part 1)
  • What does learner-centered leadership look like? (Part 2)
  • What does learner-centered leadership look like? (Part 3)
  • Putting learner-centered lessons into practice (Part 4)

There is so much richness in all of the episodes, and this has been a transformational inquiry for us. After reviewing all of the episodes, here are some of the most memorable conversations.

Start with

  • Episode 1: What is learner-centered? Interview with Kelly Young, Executive Director of Education Reimagined
  • Episode 2: What is learner-centered leadership? Interview with Allan Cohen and Anya Smith

Then check out these learning environments:

  • Episode 3: Alamo Heights Independent School District
  • Episode 5: Iowa BIG
  • Episode 8: Pike Road School District
  • Episode 12 and 13: Portfolio School
  • Episode 14 and 45 : Design39Campus
  • Episode 15 and 25: Big Picture Learning
  • Episode 18: Lindsay Unified School District
  • Episode 19: MC2 Charter School
  • Episode 23 and 26: Springhouse Community School
  • Episode 24 and 35: Cajon Valley Union School District
  • Episode 29 and 37: One Stone
  • Episode 34: Norris Academy
  • Episode 40: dTech High School
  • Episode 46: Crosstown High
  • Episode 47: Young Women’s Leadership School
  • Episode 48: Elizabethton High School

In the coming year, we look forward to continuing to make sense of the themes emerging from this work and disseminating that learning more widely in the learner-centered and education communities more broadly.

What is learner-centered leadership to you? How do you connect with others to develop your understanding?

About Working At The Edge:

My name is Randy Ziegenfuss, and I'm a retired public school superintendent and a life-long educator with over 34 years experience developing a passion for teaching, learning, leadership and technology. <read more...>

I first came across the phrase working at the edge while learning about the work of Marzano, et al. School Leadership That Works: From Research to Results. In this work, the researchers define 21 responsibilities of the school leader, one being change agent. A change agent is defined as one who is, "...willing to challenge school practices that have been in place for a long time and promoting the value of working at the edge of one's competence."
