By Randy Ziegenfuss

I’ve created a free ebook that will be of value to anyone leading a digital transformation. The ebook contains what I consider to be the three key principles of a successful digital transformation based on my experiences working with stakeholders in my district as we’ve worked to transform teaching and learning over the past decade. 2015 in Review: Making Real-world Connections

I see many bloggers posting their “top posts” this time of year. I wasn’t going to share a post of that kind, but once I saw the important theme that emerged from the most-read posts here, I wanted to share. Yes…it may be interesting to see how my writing and thinking as a first-year superintendent have […]

Making Action Research Work

By Randy Ziegenfuss

Making Action Research Work

In last week’s post, we started to explore the idea of teachers and leaders as researchers of practice. We learned that educational practitioners have a unique insider perspective and should make research a part of the work. In this week’s post we’ll focus on a five step process you can follow to study, improve and innovate […]

4 Reasons Why Practitioners Should Be Researchers

4 Reasons Why Practitioners Should Be Researchers

As teachers and leaders, we don’t often think of ourselves as “researchers.” After all, when we think of research, we think of academic outsiders studying borderline interesting topics and writing long, confusing reports about their discoveries. We don’t typically think of practitioners as doing the work of “researchers.” It shouldn’t be that way. We need […]

Podcasts and A PD Story

With this post, I wanted to share some content posted online recently. My colleague, Lynn Fuini-Hetten, and I published three new podcasts at TLTalkRadio and a blog post on Edutopia. Season 2: Episode 4 – Leadership: The Fuel That Ignites Transformation in Teaching and Learning Last February, we traveled to an Apple What’s Next: Implementing Research […]

How do we make our schools amazing places for learners?

How do we make our schools amazing places for learners?

On this blog, we’ve previously looked at how an analysis of our district assessment and evaluation efforts resulted in identifying challenges we need to address to move our digital transformation work forward. One of our focus areas this year is to more clearly articulate a vision – to answer the audacious question, How do we […]

3 Key Components of Digital Transformation – Pt. 2: Support it

Last week we started to explore the key components behind a successful digital transformation. In Pt. 1, we learned some ideas about the first key component – Lead it. In this week’s post we’ll focus on the second component – Support it. Support it. “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who […]

What are you not teaching?

By Randy Ziegenfuss

What are you not teaching?

As we work to reimagine our classrooms, I found this short video full of interesting questions from Reid Wilson: What won’t we be teaching 10, 20, 30 years from now?” What don’t our students need to know to become successful global citizens? What’s now dead in education? What do we take out? What gets cut? […]

Transform, not reform – A transformational vision for education in the US

This past September, the non-profit Convergence released A transformational vision for education in the US, the outcome of Education Reimagined, an initiative of Convergence dedicated to the realization of learner-centered education in the US.  Founded in 2009, Convergence has an interesting mission: to convene people with conflicting views to identify solutions for action around national […]

The Culture of “School”

By Randy Ziegenfuss

The Culture of “School”

I’m revisiting my highlights in Ron Richhart’s Creating Culture of Thinking: The 8 Forces We Must Master to Truly Transform Our Schools. A revisit to any great text surfaces new questions. One of my biggest questions drawn from the text is What kind of intellectual life are we surrounding our children with at home, school and in the classroom? You’d […]

About Working At The Edge:

My name is Randy Ziegenfuss, and I'm a retired public school superintendent and a life-long educator with over 34 years experience developing a passion for teaching, learning, leadership and technology. <read more...>

I first came across the phrase working at the edge while learning about the work of Marzano, et al. School Leadership That Works: From Research to Results. In this work, the researchers define 21 responsibilities of the school leader, one being change agent. A change agent is defined as one who is, "...willing to challenge school practices that have been in place for a long time and promoting the value of working at the edge of one's competence."
